Georgia Dugout Preview

Q&A with Oconee County’s Cole Johnson

News

Meet Cole Johnson, a 6-foot-2, 190-pound outfielder/pitcher from Oconee County High School. Johnson is a member of the North Georgia Big 10 cover for the 2025 Georgia Dugout Preview Magazine. Here are 10 questions with him.

Q: What in-game rituals do you have?

A: I blow into my batting gloves. I take the same number of practice swings as balls in the count.

Q: Are you a morning person or a night owl?

A: Definitely, a night owl. I wake up early, but I can’t get going until after lunch.

Q: What is your favorite way to spend a weekend?

A: If I am not in a baseball tournament, which is obviously number one, I want to be fishing on the Oconee River.

Q: Name one thing people may be surprised to learn about you?

A: My dad never played high school baseball.

Q: Who is your favorite teacher and what is your favorite high school subject?

A: My favorite teacher is my 3rd grade math teacher; Mrs. McGee and my favorite high school subject is math.

Q: Outside of baseball, what is your next hobby?

A: I love to hunt and fish, really anything outdoors.

Q: What jersey number do you wear and what reason did you choose that number?

A: I wear number 2 not for a specific person, I have just grown up loving the number 2.

Q: What do you like the most about playing baseball?

A: Baseball is a humbling game of ups and downs.  If you feel like you can’t get out, eventually you will go through a slump.  If you feel like you can’t buy a hit, eventually you will start finding grass.

Q: Do you have any pets? If so, talk about them.

A: I have two dogs and a cat.  The cat’s named Cat-Cat, just showed up at our house one day about 8 years ago and has stayed outside ever since.  Our dogs, both King-Charles Cavaliers are 7 (Barkley) and 4 months (Wallie).  The breed is known to be lazy, so both just sleep on vents around the house all day.

Q: After baseball, what career are you planning to pursue?

A: I love weather, so I want to pursue a degree in Meteorology.  I specifically love tornadoes, so the whole storm-chaser idea fascinates me.
