GHSA Private Classification: Calvary Day sweeps Savannah Christian for title
STATESBORO, Ga. -- Quinn Johnson's sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh scored Waylan Heidik for the go-ahead run, then Noah Bauer worked a scoreless bottom of the seventh to send Calvary Day to a 4-3 victory in Game 2 of the best-of-three Georgia High School Association Private classification Monday night at Georgia Southern's JI Clements Field.
The Game 2 victory followed up a 9-1 Calvary Day rout in Game 1 as the Cavaliers (29-7) captured the GHSA's inaugural Private school classification after coming up short in last season's Class 3A state championship series. It was Calvary Day's first state baseball championship since the Cavaliers won the Class 1A championship in 2005.
Johnson's sacrifice fly came after the Cavaliers loaded the bases in the top of the seventh in the all-Savannah championship series.
In Game 1, Heidik's RBI double scored three runs and highlighted a six-run first inning as Calvary Day took a 6-0 lead and were never threatened behind Johnson who work six and third innings on the mound to earn the victory.
Savannah Christian (26-15) was playing in its first baseball state championship series since the Red Raiders won the GHSA Class 1A Private division in 2017.
