GHSA Class 1A Division II State Championship Series: Lanier County tops Wilcox County for second straight state title
STATESBORO, Ga. -- Lanier County won its second straight Georgia High School Association Class 1A Division II state baseball championship with a 4-1 victory over Wilcox County Wednesday evening at Georgia Southern's JI Clements Field.
The Bulldogs (33-7) got a complete-game pitching performance from Ashton Cook who limited Wilcox County to just a run on three hits as Lanier County won the decisive third game in the best-of-three championship series after splitting the first two games of the series. Cook fanned three and walked one in a game that lasted just an hour and a half.
Wilcox (27-10) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning on an RBI single from Myles Davis, but Lanier County answered in its half of the second when Drake Wolford drew a bases-loaded to force home a run.
The Bulldogs took the lead for good in the third on an RBI groundout from Ashton Cook.
Lanier then added two more in the fourth on Stone Carey's two-run single.
Hayden Mullis finished with two hits to lead Lanier County's six-hit attack.
