GHSA Class 3A State Championship Series: Troup County tops Cherokee Bluff in three games

ROME, Ga. -- Davis Moncus had every reason to toss his glove into the air in celebration after Troup County recorded the final out.

The way Game 3 started for Moncus, this one felt good.

Troup County overcame an early three-run deficit and topped Cherokee Bluff 6-3 Wednesday afternoon in Game 3 of the best-of-three state Georgia High School Association state championship series at AdventHealth Stadium to capture the school's first state baseball championship.

Cherokee Bluff finishes as the state runner-up for the second straight year.

The Tigers (32-9), after getting run-ruled Tuesday night in Game 2, fell behind the Bears in the top of the first inning when Cherokee Bluff (28-14) pushed three runs across the plate on a combination of walks and wild pitches and an RBI single from Ethan England. Moncus must have felt everything was against him as he threw 45 of his 113 pitches in the top of the first inning.

But the Tigers cut the deficit in the bottom of the first to 3-2 on an RBI goundout from Carson Walker and an RBI triple from Fisher Baltzell.

Troup County took the lead for good in the bottom of the third on an RBI single from Walker and a two-run triple from Chase Mosely to make it 5-3.

Walker's RBI single in the fourth gave Troup a 6-3 advantage.

And with Moncus in control, that was all the Tigers needed.
